Claims McCain is a racist
By Chris Ingram
Irreverent View occasionally solicits new author/contributors from time to time. We generally get a good response. There are always a couple of nut cases, but for the most part good people, mostly decent writers, and people with strong opinions. Then there are those who are just plain losers – different from the nut cases – these people are mad at the world but they are hapless bullies hiding behind the anonymity of the internet.
Just this week we received a column submission from some guy I’ll call “Dave.” What Dave wrote wasn’t exactly Irreverent View’s “style” but I gave it a read. His column was an amateurish, albeit mildly amusing piece attacking John McCain. It stopped being funny though when toward the end, it not so subtly suggested John McCain is a racist.
I e-mailed the author back the following:
“Thank you for your submission. It’s a little off style for the site, and I’m a little uncomfortable with the racial tones. I value and encourage diversity of opinion from Dems. and Repubs., but I think this crosses a line of being a little malicious, and certainly unfounded (I am not aware of any legitimate charges that McCain is a racist).
If you want to alter the piece a bit, I’d be happy to reconsider.”
“Dave” in full snark mode wrote me back the following:
“I totally respect your editorial choices, If (sic) you believe the piece is malicious then so be it. However, your ignorance of McCain’s racial intolerance and his statements referring to Asian’s as gooks and his propensity well known of in (sic) Washington circles of telling off color and racial jokes points to either blindness or ineptitude on the part of your publication.
Imagine if I sent you the same letter, (I am not aware of any legitimate charges that Bill Clinton is a philanderer) or (I am not aware of any legitimate charges that Bush has lied to us). You hold yourself as the final arbiter of legitimate, it makes the publication a mockery of itself.
Thank you for not publishing my article, that’s one I owe you.”
I replied back to him, “You’re welcome Dave. Now go get a life!”
Seriously folks, I’m not saying John McCain is perfect. I’m not saying he never told an insensitive joke. And I don’t deny he called a certain group of south-east Asians “gooks” a few years ago. But I will say this. After spending five years in the Hanoi Hilton (prison camp for all of you Gen Y and Z kids) if anyone has the right to call someone from Vietnam a gook, it is John McCain.
That’s just the blind and inept opinion of this mockery of a website.
