Seeking to avoid a repeat of Tampa’s mayoral race, Duval comes out big for Republican Mike Hogan
By Chris Ingram
The Duval County Republican Executive Committee came out big for Republican candidate Mike Hogan earlier today. Hogan is in a run-off with liberal Democrat Alvin Brown for Jacksonville Mayor. Duval REC Chairman Lenny Curry issued a check in the amount of $50,000.00 to Hogan at a press conference complete with a huge faux check.
Curry is seeking to avoid a repeat of the mayoral election in Tampa earlier this year. In that race Republicans failed to make much of a showing as Republican Rose Ferlita was trounced by Democrat Bob Buckhorn — though the two cities differ in that Jacksonville’s candidates appear with a partisan label on the ballot while Tampa’s do not.
This from the Florida Times-Union:
Saying they were “all in,” local and state Republican leaders stepped up big for mayoral candidate Mike Hogan Monday morning. The local party wrote a $50,000 check — the maximum amount allowed by law — to Hogan’s campaign, an amount that was matched by the Republican Party of Florida.
“There is still a war of ideas going on,” said Lenny Curry, chair of the Duval County Republican Party and vice chair of the state party. “There are distinct differences … today, we are going to begin throwing a series of punches and deliver a knockout blow.”
Hogan appeared briefly to thank the party for its support and make the case that Jacksonville is “a significant bellwether race for a lot of reasons.”
Associated Industries of Florida also kicked in for the Hogan campaign in what Chris Verlander, a senior vice president for the statewide trade organization, said was a first.

If this guy Curry isn’t on somebody’s short list of up and comers, the GOP/RPOF needs its head examined.

The Obama administration is pouring tons of money into this race, because they know that a black guy as Mayor helps Obama in November 2012.
