Bennett confirms (again) he’s going to run against Castor
By Chris Ingram
The Sarasota Herald-Tribune is now reporting what I reported in my column in the Tampa Tribune a week ago: State Senator Mike Bennett intends to run against U.S. Rep. Kathy Castor next year.
I spoke to Bennett again today and he says he will have his campaign committee up and running by May 20th (a few weeks later than he initially indicated). Bennett said by then he will be “Happy, willing and able to take money from anyone who is willing to give to his campaign to help me defeat liberal Kathy Castor.”
From the Sarasota Herald-Tribune:
Bennett for Congress?
State Sen. Mike Bennett, R-Bradenton, is leaving no doubt about his plans to run for Congress in 2012.
Bennett said when the Florida Legislature adjourns on May 6, he will file to run for the 11th Congressional District, which is currently held by U.S. Rep. Kathy Castor, D-Tampa.
Currently, Bennett does not live in that district, which is based in Tampa and stretches down to include heavily Democratic parts of Palmetto and Bradenton.
But Bennett is counting on the 11th District to be redrawn to include more of Manatee County and less of Hillsborough as part of the congressional redistricting process. Bennett said, because of how big Manatee and Sarasota counties have become, the Legislature will likely have to take more of Manatee County out of Buchanan’s 13th District and put those voters into the 11th District.
Currently, the 13th District has 61,000 people more than the 696,345 people required to make each district equal in population. The neighboring 11th District currently has about 673,000 and needs at least 22,000 more people to balance the district.
The Legislature is not expected to redraw the districts until January.
