Please join me for lunch with former Congressman Jim Davis who will be the speaker at the next Irreverent View lunch on Friday, January 11, 2013. Davis will share his views on the fiscal cliff, the economy, budget, and other things related to politics and government. Davis is just the second Democrat to speak at an I.V. lunch. The first Democrat to attend was Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn – who set a new I.V. lunch attendance record.

About the lunch*
The lunch group is informal but we have some loose/suggested criteria. They are: You should either be a card-carrying Republican, professed libertarian, a conservative, or someone who thinks our country is currently going down the toilet because most of the politicians (both Rs and Ds) we elect are a bunch of bums and morons (think Barack Obama and John Boehner) who are more concerned with their own egos, their own image, and getting re-elected than they are concerned about the future of the next generation. You can be a liberal Republican, or a conservative Democrat, a limousine liberal, or even a card-carrying socialist — though the rest of us may wonder what is wrong with you if you are one of those; still, you’re welcome anyway (seriously, all are welcome, we’re just having some fun here).
IMPORTANT! Please note the following: If you think the TEA Party has any idea as to how to solve America’s problems, or if you believe that we can get out of $86.8 trillion dollars of debt without having some level of tax increases, or if you ever listen to Rush Limbaugh without rolling your eyes at least once, this meeting may not be for you. As such, we ask that you please leave your blinders on, and plan on packing a sack lunch and eating at your desk while watching Fox News Channel or listening to Rush that day.
(*) Irreverent View lunch criteria are not necessarily the views of our guest speakers or lunch participants, but they should be and they probably are.
Question: “Chris, why are you inviting a Democrat to speak at your lunch again?”
Answer: Though I don’t agree with them, I have respect for Democrats in general, and specifically for people like Jim Davis and Bob Buckhorn. They are both committed to making our country and our community better. Whether Republican, Democrat, independent, or something else, we would all benefit by having civil exchanges of viewpoints, concerns, and other information among those with whom we disagree.
Republicans who only watch Fox News Channel and listen to AM talk radio for their news sources are as short-sighted and absent-minded as Democrats who only watch MSNBC (or CNN, or NBC, or ABC, or CBS, or PBS, or…) or read the NY Times (or the Tampa Bay Times, or the LA Times, or the USA Today, or the Miami Herald, or…).
In short, we all benefit by having a civil exchange with “the other side” and expanding our horizons beyond where we self-select our usual information sources.
You must RSVP if you plan to attend. This month’s Irreverent View lunch will be on Friday, January 4, 2013 at 11:45 a.m. at Rigatoni Restaurant located at 3437 West Kennedy Blvd. (just east of Himes on the north side of Kennedy). Rigatoni will have an all-inclusive lunch with 3-5 menu choices. The cost is $15.00. The lunch fee/eating lunch is not optional if you plan to attend. Seating is limited and you must RSVP if you plan to attend. Parking is available in the front, side, and back of the restaurant as well as in the parking lot of the apartment building directly behind Rigatoni. As always, feel free to bring a guest, but you must RSVP as seating is limited.
