Bathrooms and baseball

If Gries’ cries of altruism are true, I would suggest he start his philanthropy at Skyway Park — or most any other park in the county that is managed and maintained by volunteers. The park’s fields don’t drain well, and dandelions choke the grass on most of the fields. The buildings and facilities around the baseball fields are decades old and in desperate need of repair.

Unless you have kids who play league athletics in Hillsborough County, you probably are not aware of the fact that 55 of the county’s 59 athletic parks are managed and maintained by volunteer groups.

Such is the case at Skyway Park.

Skyway is adjacent to the residential neighborhood of Dana Shores and is just west of the airport. It serves the youths of the Town ‘N Country area.

A nonprofit league, managed by a board of directors who are all volunteers, manages everything from field maintenance to cleaning the bathrooms and running the concessions. For its part, the county cuts the grass once a week, pays the water bill to keep the fields moist, and will take care of things such as a major plumbing problem if one arises.  Continue reading “Bathrooms and baseball”

Irreverent View ballot recommendations

Irreverent View strongly and enthusiastically recommends Dave Weldon for U.S. Senate. Unfortunately, I expect Cornellius’s silver spoon will continue to bring him undeserved fame and decision-making authority he is not fit to hold.

Tampa-area ballot recommendations

By Chris Ingram

A little late, but better than never, Irreverent View’s 2012 Primary Ballot recommendations are out.  These recommendations cover all Hillsborough and a few Pinellas and Pasco county races that cross county lines, plus U.S. House and Senate races.  In most cases recommendations are for Republican Primary races. This is because the Democrats are even worse than the Republicans at recruiting candidates, and there are few contested Democrat races.

For some races, in addition to my recommendations, I have also included who I think will win and why.

Please feel free to share with friends and family, print out and take to the polls, or just delete them and flip a coin. Whatever you do, don’t forget to vote! Continue reading “Irreverent View ballot recommendations”

Two dumbest ideas out of Hillsborough Co. Comm. since Kevin White was around

If Les Miller and the other Democrat do-gooders who want to carve a special district were really concerned about Hispanic representation, they’d go out and find some Hispanic candidates. As it occurred last year, no Hispanic was elected to the BOCC because no Hispanics ran! Les, if you want a Hispanic on the commission, get one to run for it.

Does Les Miller think the rest of the BOCC is that stupid?

By Chris Ingram

Just when you thought the antics of former Hillsborough County Commissioner Kevin White were in the commission’s past, the commission has begun to digress back to its dysfunctional ways.

Ironically, the commission’s new antics are being lead by the man who disposed of its former biggest clown, Mr. White – who was recently convicted of seven counts related to public corruption. (Editor’s note: Please don’t send compassion packets with things like soap on a rope to inmate Kevin White c/o Federal Bureau of Prisons until after his sentencing in January).

Les Miller's plan is a partisan power play.

White’s replacement of course is none other than Commissioner Les “double-dippin’” Miller. It seems when Mr. Miller isn’t busy doing whatever it is he is being paid $96,000 a year to do as “student ombudsman and public liaison at USF” he does stuff related to being a county commissioner – for which he is paid $92,000 a year.

That “stuff” has amounted to a very strategic plan of Mr. Miller’s to totally change the way commissioners are elected as well as how the commission annually selects its chairman. Both are what political operatives would call a “power play by the minority to regain the majority.”

Here are Les Miller’s $188,000 plans: Continue reading “Two dumbest ideas out of Hillsborough Co. Comm. since Kevin White was around”

Don’t get me wrong folks, I think Hillsborough County Commissioner Victor Crist is a total goober. He’s the kind of unaccountable, say-anything, career politician that is ruining our great country.

Hillsborough candidate and referenda recommendations

The options for voters in Hillsborough County for the General Election are weak to say the least. In an age when voters nationwide have tended to reject incumbent officeholders and career politicians, Hillsborough voters tended to embrace them – at least in the Primary Elections, the result of which gives us our General Election candidates.

Irreverent View dissects the races and makes recommendations in most all of Hillsborough County’s competitive races (and a few that aren’t competitive)

With absentee ballots already in the mail, it’s time for a quick assessment of local candidates. You can review our state, congressional, and ballot initiative recommendations by clicking here.

Irreverent View exclusive: Ethics complaint filed against Jim Norman

Tampa attorney and local Republican Paul Phillips has filed a wide-ranging ethics complaint against eighteen-year incumbent Hillsborough County Commissioner Jim Norman who is currently seeking a seat in the Florida Senate. Norman is term limited from seeking the county commission job again. He faces State Representative Kevin Ambler in the G.O.P. Primary on Tuesday.

“Non-performin'” Norman needs a job

As you know, it’s tough being an elected official when the darned media starts asking questions about where you got your lakefront resort home in Arkansas and a pair of nice boats to go with it. What they don’t realize is it is tough being a county commissioner; and I need those boats for recreation – especially fishing for some big Bass! I have done my best to keep who paid for my wife’s house from you and the media because I don’t like to see people get upset. And that’s what you would be if you really knew where the coin came from. You would say: “that smells like something Kevin White dragged in.”

Never content to be outdone by Kevin White, Jim Norman is equally disgraceful.

A satirical look at Norman’s latest plea for help
